ESP Professional Growth Continuum

The ESP Professional Growth Continuum (PGC) is a first-of-its-kind framework to help education support professionals (ESPs) raise their professional standing at every stage of their career. The PGC outlines standards for what ESPs should know and be able to do to elevate their practice and foster student and school success at ny stage of their careers. The continuum model reflects the skill levels of an ESP and provides a path to attaining further knowledge and mastery as indicated within eight universal standards.

Each standard contains three levels of practice—foundational, proficient, and advanced/mastery—and applies to all career families.   

The Eight Universal Standards

• Communication
• Cultural Competence
• Organization
• Reporting
• Ethics
• Health and Safety
• Technology
• Professionalism

The Standards span across all career families and provide ESPs with:  

• a way to identify skills, knowledge, experience, and responsibility they bring to the job and want to strengthen to better serve their community, students, and school;  

• the language to describe their value and impact on the school, district, or worksite with peers, supervisors, families, community members, and school leadership;  

• guidance on how to advance their skill set through leadership, mentorship, serving as a peer role model; and 

• a Standards-based demonstration through the NEA PGC micro-credentials of skills and knowledge that can be used to bargain for: time, space, and money for professional development; paid professional development; continuing education credits; and movement on a salary scale (e.g., increased pay or stipends).
